2009–2010:
Opera Circle's 14th Season of Adventure
Celebrating the City of Cleveland

  • L'isola disabitata (Desert Island) by Joseph Haydn

    • September 25 and 26, 2009
    • Superior Avenue Bridge: lower level
    • Part of Ingenuity Festival

Of all his operas, Haydn considered L'isola disabitata his favorite. Presented in the Year of Haydn (200th anniversary of his death), this unique opera takes us to a never-never land reminiscent of Shakespearean Tempest. L'isola disabitata overflows with superb music to Metastasio's magnificent text. All recitatives are accompanied, thus foreshadowing later developments of opera in the Romantic period.

    • With Opera Circle Orchestra.
    • Free.
  • I Capuleti e i Montecchi by Vicenzo Bellini

    • November 6 and 8, 2009
    • Historic Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus

The story of Romeo and Juliet opens Opera Circle's return to its signature Bellini Series, now in a new 2009-2015 edition comprising 7 Bellini operas in 7 consecutive seasons. The main aisle of the historic church will witness a funeral of Giulietta.

    • Sponsored by Northern Ohio Opera League.
    • Tickets.
  • Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti

    • November 20 and 22, 2009
    • Bohemian National Hall

The presentation of Don Pasquale is traditional to the point of recreating the original process of producing a bel-canto opera, using the cues in the score, with no stage director. Let's see what the talented and inventive artists will come up with.

    • With Cleveland Women's Orchestra.
    • Tickets.
  • Chopin and His Master, comprising:

Echo in the Woods (Echo w lesie) by Józef Elsner
17 Songs by Frédéric Chopin in a staged setting.

    • Spring 2010
    • Polish-American Cultural Center

Celebrating 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, the production includes a US premiere of the one-act classical comic opera by Elsner, who was Chopin's teacher. Light and lovely.
