  • The Story of Romeo & Juliet with musical fragments from the opera by Vincenzo Bellini

    • Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 7 pm
    • Superior Avenue Bridge: lower level
    • Part of Ingenuity Festival, ingenuitycleveland.com

Opera Circle will present a preview of Vincenzo Bellini's opera based on the story of Romeo and Juliet (Italian title: I Capuleti e i Montecchi) using fragments from this great opera performed by soloists in costume. The presentation will render the gist of the beauty of Bellini's bel-canto vocal line and the essence of the drama, just enough to make you thrilled to see the full scale production with orchestra and chorus on November 6 and 8 at St. Stanislaus Church. The production opens Opera Circle's well-known Bellini series revisited starting this fall 2009. Sung in Italian with English translation projected on a screen.

The presentation of Don Pasquale is traditional to the point of recreating the original process of producing a bel-canto opera, using the cues in the score, with no stage director. Let's see what the talented and inventive artists will come up with.

At a Budapest music hall, the young Count Edwin falls in love with the famous café singer Sylvia Varescu. However a relationship is unthinkable for reasons of their differing social position. After much confusion, mistaken identity, and heartbreak, it is discovered that Edwin's own mother had been on the stage prior to her marriage. As a result, Edwin's father must drop his objection to the union of Edwin and Sylvia. Production generously underwritten by Drs. Francis and Jane Gross. Thank you!
